Spirulina is a microalgae, specifically a cyanobacterium, one of the first life forms to colonize the Earth more than three billion years ago.  

Spirulina algae ( Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima ) is green-blue in color and occurs in helical filaments, hence its name. It grows spontaneously in brackish lakes with an alkaline pH in tropical and subtropical climates. 

Already used in ancient Aztec and Mesoamerican diets, spirulina has attracted scientific interest in recent decades as a superfood capable not only of filling any dietary deficiencies but also of being useful in numerous fields, from astronaut nutrition to nourishing those unable to chew.  


Spirulina contains all the essential amino acids necessary for protein synthesis, vitamins A, B, C, E, K , essential Omega 6 fatty acids and many mineral salts , but not iodine.
